Pillars
 
There are four pillars to the Reggio Emilia Approach:
Children: At the centre of the Reggio Emilia approach is acceptance and understanding of the natural stages of development of a child, as well as the close relationships that they share with their environment, together with the belief that a child must have some control over and interest in his or her day-to-day activity, for learning to make sense.
Parents: With–in the Reggio Emilia approach, parents are a vital component, viewed as partners, collaborators and advocates for their children. Teachers respect parents as each child's “first teacher” and involve parents in every aspect of the curriculum including planning and developmental issues. Parents are encouraged to apply the principles of Reggio Emilia for their home parenting approach too.
Teachers: Key to the Reggio Emilia approach is the solicitation of multiple points of view and individual regard to children's needs, interests, and abilities. Teachers act as guides, researchers and resources for the children. They are trained to respond appropriately to their curiosity and ideas, and through listening, observing and sharing, nurturing an atmosphere of community and collaboration.
Environment: The organisation of the physical environment is crucial to Reggio Emilia's early childhood program, and is often referred to as the child's "third teacher". The school is designed to give an integrated and stimulating environment, harmonising interior and exterior applications, and the surrounding community.
